Over the years, there was an evolution in modern Celtics and hence they were able to establish symbols throughout this period. Even though at the time there was very little that was written in history, the knowledge together with the symbols have been transferred from one generation to the next. Celtic body tattoos were a form of art, which was used to ensure that the symbols kept the traditions of the Celtics alive with Celtic knots, cross and some other common Celtic art.

The cross symbolizes Christianity and as a design of the tattoos, it represents visually heritage and faith. In the earlier days, the symbol was used to signify territorial ownership and protection across Europe. The Celtic knot, which is complex features loops that have no end signifies a cycle of rebirth and also death that never ends. The detailed knot and pure tattoo designs are usually never ending but if a person adds an end, it then signifies a spiral. The knots have a deeper meaning since they are a representation of the repeated crossing of spiritual and physical elements. The strands symbolize life, faith and love. A Celtic body tattoo also expresses the origin of a person; that the person has a Celtic descent such as the Scots, Welsh and the Irish.

Celtic body tattoos have a number of details like mazes, spirals and knots. It is important for one who has a desire to have a Celtic body tattoo rendered on the body to seek a professional tattoo artist who is in a position to do it with skill. Celtic tattoo designs, for those who have the Celtic heritage such as the Welsh, Scots and Irish, is one way for them to express pride in their rich heritage. Hence, Celtic body tattoos are a proof of affinity one has for the indigenous style of art of their ancestors.

Celtic body tattoosMajority of tattoo designs were inspired by Irish Illuminated Manuscripts. One of them was known as ‘The Book of Kells’ that was displayed in the Dublin library of Trinity College. The dates that are written in these books are much later than the time Celtic tattooing is believed to have started. Today, it is believed that Celtic body tattoos begun when the Celtic metal and stone work started. In the early days, the Celtic people displayed the skills they had on weapons, jewellery and metals. Celtic crosses and artwork is found in the other countries of Celtic origin and in the modern communities worldwide.

Modern Celtics evolved the meanings of the symbol for themselves such as Celtic motherhood, Awen symbol and Irish Claddagh symbol. The North American people who are of Celtic origin wore the Celtic tattoo symbols as an identification of their Celtic descent. There are some people who wear the body tattoos to portray their support for the Celtic culture while others just love the Celtic body tattoos.

The Celtic people used to pass down knowledge orally simply through telling stories, they kept very few written records. This resulted to very little evidence of the Celtic body tattoo being available; this is despite the fact that cross tattoos are a common design of the Celtic body tattoo.

Celtic Knot tattoos are made using knot work. These body tattoo designs have no beginning nor do they have an end. This type of knot, which has neither an end nor a beginning is a symbol of the cycle of rebirth and death which can never come to an end.

Celtic body tattoosKnots in many cases are unending and spiral apart from when they have a design that is zoomorphic of heads, tails, feet or spiral in nature. Knot works that are considered impure ends with a strand and broken ends with no eventual connection to the original band. Zoomorphic tattoos are constructed in a similar manner as the normal knotwork. Zoomorphic designs on the other hand, use animal tails, feet, body, heads, or legs. Spiral designs are formed from spiral lines and tend to twirl in a parallel manner, normally in a uniform manner. Maze designs comprise of parallel lines forming a maze.

The art of the Celts is considered amongst the fastest growing forms of art ever. It is easy to recognize this body art tattoo because of its complex knots animal forms also referred to as zoomorphism, interlacing patterns and color together with other symbols which are only found in the world of the Celts. The Celtic cross is recognized as being the top most of the Celtic designs. The art is done using the black color while in certain cases other colors are included so that the design can be brightened up.

It is not quite clear whether the ancient Celts used the visual tattoo designs. Despite the fact that Julius Ceaser mentioned in his writings about the rebellious Celtic people and their body art tattoos, he did not mention which type they were. To date, the distinctive tattoos of the Celts remain cool especially because of their decorative representations of natural objects and animals together with their interlacing knots. This is mainly because just as the tribal tattoos, the main concern of the Celtic body tattoo is to bring about an emotive feeling in the design instead of depicting an object reastically.

Celtic body tattoosEven though the Celts do not have a language that is written, they had a visual style which is unique depicting the love they had for nature and the effort they made in expressing the complexities of life through the interlacing designs with no end or beginning. The priests borrowed the aesthetic style of the ancient Celtic people and merged it together with Christianity to decorate their bible manuscripts .The Celtic cross is considered the best example of the body art tattoo. As a result, the whole nation got converted into Christianity, thus creating a genesis for these tattoos. Celtic body art tattoos are amongst difficult body modifications and labor available and therefore the art together with its tattoo removal must be done by a professional.
